As you walk down the street you are approached by a dog. He is on his guard trying to discern your intentions. He will follow you and interpret your gestures as friendly or aggressive. He will try to engage you in a relationship and get you to pay attention to him.

Sniff is an interactive projection in a storefront window. As the viewer walks by the projection, her movements and gestures are tracked by a computer vision system. A CG dog dynamically responds to these gestures and changes his behavior based on the state of engagement with the viewer.

Virtual Window Shopping

Marks & Spencer, Liberty & American Apparel have all signed up to NearLondon’s virtual West End, joining John Lewis which announced its decision to participate in the interactive project earlier this month.

Some of the London’s most famous shopping areas – Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and Leicester Square – will be mapped out.

Internet users will be able to wander down streets, click into stores and browse the items for sale. The virtual world will be made as realistic as possible, with even weather conditions reproduced in real time.

The environment will also be enriched by buses driving down streets, news stands that reflect breaking stories and content from films being screened at cinemas in Leicester Square streamed on billboards. Christmas lights will even turn on once those in the real world are switched on.

Wikitude is an augmented reality iPhone app that blends Wikipedia with real life, allowing you to view comments other people have left about the world around you.

The app allows you to access a wide range of data on places, buildings and points of interest in your vicinity simply by looking through the camera on your iPhone 3GS.

Information from Wikipedia, local reviews from Qype and crowdsourced data from the Wikitude website appear in text boxes superimposed over the real world.

A new twitter app used by comedians Stephen Fry and Matt Lucas is enabling members of the micro-blogging service to lose weight by listing what people have eaten.

Tweet what you eat creates a food diary, with a calorie counter, for Twitter users who sign up to the free app.

Video screens hit paper magazines

The first video advert inside a print title has been published inside the American magazine Entertainment Weekly.

The small screen, built into a cardboard insert, contains an advert for Pepsi Max and trailers for US TV network, CBS.

There are also in-built speakers, so the viewer can hear the advert too.

”This is an extraordinary way to refresh how we interact with consumers,” said Pepsi-Cola’s chief marketing officer, Frank Cooper.

Chip technology is used to store the video – described as similar to that used in singing greeting cards – which is activated when the page is turned.

The slim-line screens – around the size of a mobile phone display – also have rechargeable batteries.

Each chip can hold up to 40 minutes of video.
